FAQs ... frequently asked questions about insurance

We have compiled a list of State Insurance Services customers' frequently asked questions in order to provide you with additional information to aid you in your insurance and financial planning. If you don't see your question answered here, please use our contact form or contact us at our Toll Free Number 888-313-3831 and talk to one of our experienced customer service representatives.

What do I do if I have an accident or loss?
  • Contact the police immediately.
  • Do not discuss the accident with anyone but the police.
  • Do not admit fault or disclose your coverage amount.
  • Write down the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of all people involved or who witnessed the accident.
  • Contact State Insurance/Investment Services using one of our listed telephone numbers.

What should I do to reduce the cost of my automobile insurance?

  • Maintain a safe driving record.
  • Consider higher deductibles on Comprehensive and Collision Coverages.
  • If you own more than one auto, check with your agent on the possibility of multi-car discounts.
  • Keep your policy active. Continuous renewal of our policy can lead to renewal discounts.
  • Including specific additions to your car (i.e. anti-lock brakes, airbags, daytime running lights, alarm systems). This usually applies to recent models.
  • Taking the New York State Defensive Driving Course will lower your insurance premium by 10%.

What factors will affect my insurance premium rates?
  • Your driving record. (violations and accidents)
  • Your credit history.
  • Your age.
  • The year, make, and model of your particular automobile.
  • The degree of coverage you choose to include on your insurance policy.
  • Your place of residency.

How does my credit history determine my insurance premiums?
  • Your credit history reflects your ability to make payments and respond to bills. Insurance companies use credit scores to determine how responsible a potential client is with paying their premiums. Similar to your driving record, the better your credit score is, the greater your chances of receiving a lower premium. Hence, maintaining a good credit history is important in developing a low premium.

What's the difference between all of our Insurance Carriers?(i.e. Travelers, Progressive, AIG, etc.)
  • Each particular insurance carrier specializes in providing the same insurance. The primary difference between the companies will be their premium rates and the type of clients they prefer to insure. Each carrier has its own guidelines as to who they will accept and provide insurance for. Our job at State Insurance/Investment Services is to find the most suitable companies that will provide the lowest premiums for our customers.
